Tell Your Senators to Oppose Ratifying the U.N.'s Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities

Dear FreedomWorks member, As one of our million-plus FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to contact your senators and urge them to vote oppose ratifying the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).While the Senate recently voted to not ratify the CRPD, the U.N. treaty is far from dead— Senate leadership has already pledged to bring it to another vote at the beginning of the 113th Congress. The U.N. treaty may sound well-intentioned but it would erode U.S. sovereignty and hurt families with disabled children.

The Message of Welfare: 'No, You Can't'

So, you didn't win last week's Powerball? I didn't either, which is why I'm writing blog posts instead of designing a helipad for my new private island.  I was surprised to see even my most cynical friends succumbing to lottery fever in a bad way. Though usually shrewd with their finances, they couldn't resist throwing a few bucks at a gas station attendant for that infinitesimal shot at half a billion dollars.

Failed Past Purges, Stop Future Purges

John Boehner’s recent purge of conservatives Huelskamp, Amash, and Schweikert from prominent House Committees isn’t the first time honest Congressmen have been punished for fidelity to their constituents. (In the most recent Republican Conference meeting, Speaker Boehner has apparently threatened to purge additional Members who do not toe the line.) In 1995, Appropriations Chairman Bob Livingston, with the blessing of then-Speaker Newt Gingrich kicked Rep. Mark Neumann off the Appropriations Committee for voting against a leadership-sponsored bill.

Robust School Choice is the Path to Graduation

For the first time, the U.S. Department of Education has released information on graduation rate by state. This year, states used common measurements, making these comparisons possible.  "By using this new measure, states will be more honest in holding schools accountable and ensuring that students succeed," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a statement Monday.
