Freedom is Under Assault in Congress this Summer
By Adam Brandon on June 08, 2008
This summer, liberals in Congress are preparing to shackle the economy with a sweeping new slate of taxes, regulations and budget-busting bills. Advocates of limited government have a lot of work to do on a host of issues.
Biggest Tax Hike in American History
President Bush’s tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 helped spur growth after 9/11 and the dotcom bust. Unfortunately, liberals want to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire, thus creating the largest tax increase in American history. If Congress does not vote to make the tax cuts permanent, American families could be facing a tax hike of $280 billion dollars every year. I don’t need to tell you how damaging that tax hike would be in terms of jobs and wealth creation. Please help us convince Congress to make the tax cuts permanent, so that our economy can grow and compete with the rest of the world.
A Hopeful Sign in the Health Care Debate
You may have seen my recent article in The Wall Street Journal where I pointed out that some Republicans are pushing us in the wrong direction on health care. Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), in particular, has been supportive of a liberal big government plan for health care. The plan he and some of his colleagues in the Senate support would force citizens to purchase coverage, and move many Americans from private insurance to government-run insurance plans.
But while some are calling for socialized health care and more taxes, others are designing ways to improve the flawed health care system in this country with market-based solutions. Congressman John Shadegg has authored a bill to allow consumers to purchase health insurance across state lines. We all know that competition is good for any industry, and this goes for heath care too.
There is also action on the state level, with Arizona and New Jersey considering similar reforms that would help their citizens by injecting competition into the system. Health care access and costs can only improve with more competition, disclosure and personal freedom. Government, as the biggest purchaser of health insurance, has distorted the market and made the situation worse. It is time for reforms like those proposed by Congressman Shadegg and leaders in the states to move us in the right direction for health care in America.
New Taxes and Regulations on Energy
There is a lot of rhetoric coming from liberals about our dependence on foreign oil and the rising gas prices around the world. But their policies and actions have blocked attempts to increase the domestic supply of oil and gas. This has forced us to depend more on foreign tyrants and miscreants for our energy supplies. And they have stopped new refineries from being built in this country for decades.
Sent to My Inbox: A Zero-Emissions Steel Mill
Last week they were attempting to make things even worse by imposing a “cap and trade” scheme to limit carbon emissions. The Warner/Lieberman bill that we successfully defeated-- for now-- would have raised the cost of a gallon of gas by 50 cents. This would mean more pain at the pump for every American. Instead of imposing new regulations and taxes on our energy supplies, Congress should cut the gas tax, stop the outrageous spending and expand our domestic energy supplies by building refineries and exploring for oil and gas. Help us convince Congress to do the right thing by SIGNING OUR PETITION for lower gas prices.
Opposition to the Mortgage Bailout Continues to Grow
As you know, we have been delivering your comments about the mortgage bailout to Capitol Hill. During the last couple of weeks FreedomWorks staff and volunteers have printed out huge stacks of the Angry Renter petition and delivered copies to 17 key Senate offices. If you have not signed the petition, please do so now! You can also print out the list of signers from your state and fax or mail the copies to your Senators. We have successfully delayed the vote for a couple of weeks, and with your help we can stop this $300 billion massive subsidy to people who made bad decisions, but stand to get bailed out by taxpayers.
This summer, as the debates over taxes, regulations, health care and energy heat up, be sure to weigh in on these important issues by holding your legislators’ feet to the fire. We can stop economically harmful legislation like “cap and trade” and massive new tax hikes with the same grassroots action that defeated HillaryCare and Al Gore’s BTU tax in the nineties. With that in mind, please forward this email to 5 friends that don’t receive my newsletter, and ask them to join the fight for liberty this summer.
