FreedomWorks Launches New Committee to Oppose Wireless Communication Tax Scheme in Pasadena
The Committee to Stop Measure D, Sponsored by FreedomWorks Inc. will combat plan to raise taxes on communications products.
By Adam Brandon on January 29, 2008
The politicians and special interest groups that feed off of government largess in Pasadena want to tax the communications products that consumers have come to depend on like mobile phones, wireless text messaging, and possibly even the internet. These types of communications were not previously taxable, which is why the tax-hungry politicians want to find new ways to grab money from taxpayers’ wallets.
The ballot initiative, Measure D, is described by its proponents as a “modernization” of an existing tax. This is misleading because the proposal would reinstate a tax that has been invalidated by the elimination of the federal excise tax. Advocates of Measure D use “modernize” as a code word for creating a new revenue stream to grow government.
And since Pasadena has enjoyed a $150 million surplus over the last decade, this new tax hike scheme is completely unnecessary.
Voters in Pasadena have an opportunity to defeat Measure D by voting “NO” on February 5th. The unions and politicians will be out in full force to support the tax hike, and freedom advocates must come out in full force to defeat it. To that end, The Committee to Stop Measure D, Sponsored by FreedomWorks, Inc. is launching a multi-pronged effort that includes mail, paid advertising, and Get Out The Vote (GOTV) phone mobilization and hand-to-hand literature drops at polling locations on election day. FreedomWorks also sponsored the website www.freedomworks.org/petition/measured.
FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey commented, “FreedomWorks is proud to help lead the effort to stop this new technology tax hike scheme in Pasadena. Our members together with other concerned taxpayers in Pasadena are working hard from now until Election Day to send a message to the politicians that growing government with more of their hard-earned tax dollars is unacceptable.”
FreedomWorks is a free-market issue advocacy organization with nearly 850,000 volunteer members nationwide and more than 60,000 in California.
