HB 4852 Would Add $200 Million in New Taxes

By Adam Brandon on July 10, 2007

The Michigan state House is pushing a massive tax increase on consumers in the form of a $1.35 per month surcharge on every phone subscriber. HB 4852, the “Emergency Telephone Enabling Act,” would saddle taxpayers with nearly $200 million in new taxes on both land phones and cell phones. The Michigan House claims the funds from this tax would go towards upgrading Michigan’s 911 services, but there is a Senate bill that would fund those services without raising taxes. These funds will inevitably be diverted to wasteful government programs.

Tell your state representative in Michigan to OPPOSE THE PHONE TAX!

It is time the lawmakers in Lansing rein in their spending and learn to live within their means. Just as Michiganders have to work within a fixed budget and curb their spending habits, so should the state government.

Join the growing coalition of taxpayers and consumers in opposition to HB 4852! Contact your state representative today and send a message that Michigan does not need more taxes but a return to fiscal responsibility.

Sincerely,

Dick Armey
