Keep Fighting the New York Tax Scheme
By Adam Brandon on April 08, 2008
About a week ago, FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey sent you an email about the latest anti-growth tax hike in New York. I am writing today to ask you to continue the fight against this unnecessary and unfair tax hike. Thanks for what you have already done! Once you have contacted your state lawmakers, we need you to forward this email to your conservative friends to really spread the word about this campaign!
Faced with a $4.8 billion deficit, New York legislators have been calling for more government revenue. But instead of cutting wasteful spending and reducing costly regulations, they want to raise taxes!
This time the targets of the tax hike are smokers and businesses that sell cigarettes. New York’s fiscal problems belong to everyone – not to a small portion of the population that is repeatedly asked to carry the tax burden.
Take Action and tell lawmakers that they have a spending problem, not a revenue problem!
Cigarette taxes are regressive and historically do not raise the expected amount of revenue. A tax increase will actually reduce state coffers by forcing smokers to buy their cigarettes across state lines, on the Internet or on the black market.
Take Action to tell the politicians in Albany to kick the spending habit. Doing away with regulatory barriers, cutting taxes and reducing spending are far better ways to build a budget that works for everyone.
