Make It Flake Campaign Update
By Adam Brandon on January 24, 2008
“Make It Flake” is the buzzword among conservative and libertarian activists nationwide this week.
We are less than two weeks into our campaign to get Jeff Flake, a true fiscal conservative, on the House Appropriations Committee, and we are seeing results that not only beat our expectations, but have also caught the attention of many across that country.
Understanding the concept “it’s your money,” thousands of concerned Americans like you have joined us in the fight to tell Congress that excessive spending and earmark-laden budgets are something that we will not tolerate.
When news broke of the vacant seat, we created a new website, MakeitFlake.com, to organize the campaign to get the Republican leadership to support Rep. Flake. Thanks to an aggressive, multi-faceted outreach strategy, matched with your efforts, in less than 72 hours our anticipation for hundreds of supporters making calls quickly turned into us raising that bar to thousands.
The desire to finally get the wheels of fiscal responsibility in Congress moving didn’t just stay on the MakeitFlake.com web site either.
Shortly after we launched the website, I started to receive a wave of emails and phone calls from various Member offices informing us that their phone systems simply can’t handle the volume of calls that they have been receiving. In fact, there was one office that had requested that we stopped asking people to call.
Obviously we’re not going to do that. Congress got themselves into this mess and it’s going to be Congress, with Jeff Flake driving for change on Appropriations that will get them out.
As you can imagine, with phone calls coming in on an almost constant basis, Members can’t help but pay attention and consider what we’re proposing.
There is a lot of news coming out of Washington that shows that these efforts to bring back fiscal responsibility are working.
In an article in The Hill newspaper (a publication read by most members of Congress) published on January 18, a few days after we launched our campaign, it was reported:
“The Republican Steering Committee will not meet until after the House GOP retreat next week, Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) told reporters on Thursday, giving members campaigning for the open slot on the Appropriations Committee one more week to make their cases.”
This is no coincidence!
Because of your dedication, Minority Leader Boehner has delayed the meeting to fill the vacant seat on the Appropriations Committee. He wants the full Republican Conference to discuss the earmarking issue.
This means that we now have a slightly larger window of opportunity to help push the necessary members of Congress to make the right decision.
As you can imagine, despite the importance of this issue, vacant seats on the House Appropriations Committee aren’t of interest to the mainstream media, even though this is the committee that is responsible for deciding how hundreds of billions of our tax dollars are spent.
This means that we have to resort to other methods for getting the word out. In our experience, the most cost and time efficient method has been by calling people directly and telling them that we have a rare opportunity to get someone on this committee who can bring real change.
One of the most effective things we can do is facilitate long-distance calls from activists to Capitol Hill. For only $100 we can connect 300 concerned citizens with members of Congress to express their concerns.
Due to the vast growth of this campaign and the attention we have received, I am writing to ask if you would be willing to help us with our efforts. You can help us reach more concerned Americas by visiting our secure donation page.
Just imagine how much impact 83, 166 or even 300 targeted calls could have on a member of Congress. With your generous contribution of $25, $50 or $100 this could be possible.
To give you an idea of how successful this campaign has been so far, this page has links to all of the media coverage our efforts have received. Imagine how full this page will be when you help us again to get Jeff Flake on the Appropriations Committee. Any contribution you can make will significantly increase how far we can reach.
My staff and I will continue to work day and night until this fight is over. I’m hopeful and confident, that with your support, we’ll be victorious.
The response we’ve received so far has been extremely humbling and I can only wait to see how successful the final days of this campaign will be.
Thank you again for all you have done and will hopefully continue to do to help us get a true fiscal conservative like Jeff Flake on the Appropriations Committee.
P.S. If you haven’t done so already, please don’t forget to take a look at all of the attention that this campaign has received. As I mentioned, I’m confident that with your contribution, we can increase this significantly.
