New FreedomWorks Poll Highlights Top Issues for 2014 Midterms

Washington, DC- A new FreedomWorks national poll finds that health care will take center stage in the 2014 midterms, along with the economy and jobs. A survey of 1000 registered voters in both parties found health care to be the public’s number two concern at 46 percent, following the economy and jobs at 58 percent.

FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe commented, “Health care and the economy will be the dominant issues heading into 2014. Now that hope and change have a price tag on HealthCare.gov, the best the Democrats can try to do is change the subject. Similar to 2010, Republicans can win big if they keep fighting, stay on offense, and educate the public on the inherent flaws and hypocrisy within the law. Americans across the political spectrum are open to free-market health care reform alternatives, and FreedomWorks will continue working to make sure people know about them.”

Other key findings of the poll include:

–          ObamaCare’s rocky rollout has depressed both support for the law and the president’s job approval rating. President has lost the middle- just 29 percent of independents approve of the job he’s doing, versus 67 percent disapproving.

–          Since the summer, the share of those who say they will be “worse off” under ObamaCare has risen by 6 points, and is now the answer of a clear plurality of voters.

–          A solid majority of voters in every category – including the law’s supporters- support a delay of ObamaCare. Sixty percent favor a delay “to make sure the law is fair and workable for everyone.”

–          Voters are more open than ever to replacing ObamaCare. Voters said a “start over and reform health care” message made them 34 percent more likely to vote for a hypothetical candidate, while a “give it a chance to work” message made them 16 percent less likely to do so.

–          Even ObamaCare defenders are open to alternative health care reforms. The most popular ideas among  supporters of the ACA are Individual / small business purchasing groups (72 percent), Portability (59 percent), and Reduce insurance company interference (60 percent).

The FreedomWorks survey, conducted with The polling company, inc./WomanTrend, interviewed 1000 registered voters between December 15 and 18, 2013 with a margin of error (MoE) of 3 percent overall at the 95 percent confidence interval.

Dean Clancy, FreedomWorks Vice President of Public Policy commented, “Implementation has turned Obamacare into a clear political negative for its authors, while making it ‘top of mind’ for voters. That’s a dangerous combination for candidates who support the law.”

Kellyanne Conway, Founder and President of The polling company, inc./WomanTrend added, “Take heart, conservatives. The free market is starting to win as the health care law has turned a corner. It’s on paper now, not just a promise. Americans are a lot more informed, and sober, than they were four years ago, and increasingly skeptical of both the law and the president.”
