Stop the New Tax Hike in Kentucky!
By Adam Brandon on March 10, 2008
Kentucky Governor Steve Brashear has done a great job of cutting spending and trying to bring fiscal discipline to the state. That’s why it is so surprising that someone who understands how important fiscal responsibility is would push for a massive tax hike on cigarettes. Rather than adhering to limited government principles, Gov. Brashear is calling for a cigarette tax increase that would bring the state tax to $1 a pack.
Kentucky should know better. Not only is this an unfair, regressive tax that targets a small portion of the typically poorer population, but in most cases cigarette taxes do not raise the expected amount of revenue. Smokers who aren’t forced to quit will simply cross state lines for cheaper cigarettes or will turn to the black market.
Instead of relying on such a discriminatory and unreliable source of revenue, the Governor should roll back regulations and rein in spending. This is the surest way to bring economic growth to the Bluegrass State.
TAKE ACTION and tell Governor Brashear that raising taxes isn’t good policy, and it isn’t good politics.
