For local Republicans, a buffet of choices

While the presidential primaries are still months away, you wouldn't know it by the media attention paid to the top candidates all across the political spectrum. With this in mind Keizerites have plenty to say about their choices. This is part two of a two-part feature highlighting Keizer residents' opinions on Democratic and Republican presidential hopefuls alike. This week: the Republicans. Republicans in Keizer aren't too concerned about any fallout from President George W. Bush's low approval ratings carrying over to the 2008 presidential elections.

Rep's efforts on union dues applauded

As a public employee and constituent of State Rep. Kim Thatcher, I believe a recent "Box of Soap" commentary was off base. Mr. Vowell criticized Rep. Thatcher for exercising her democratic right to be a chief petitioner on an initiative. FreedomWorks asked Thatcher if she would co-sponsor a measure to stop using taxpayer money to collect union dues. She supports the concept and was happy to lend her name.

Can't we agree to disagree?

I have always been conscious of the phrase “one man, one vote.” It is America’s great leveling device. I am not sure if all voters in Keizer have the same influence. FreedomWorks, the artist formerly known as Citizens for a Sound Economy, has decided to put three initiatives on the ballot – a state spending cap, a measure to have judges elected by geographical area, and a measure to crimp unions' ability to use collected dues for political purposes.
