How Education ‘Reform’ Serves Everyone But Our Kids

It’s the quintessential tragedy of education reform today. Paychecks – not children – are the golden ticket of a movement that has been hijacked by consultants and experts with years of business experience yet none in the classroom. Bureaucrats and reformers talk a big game about closing achievement gaps, raising high school graduation rates, and improving accountability and performance mechanisms for school districts and classrooms. Yet they fail to deliver when the time comes to put visions into workable, applicable plans. Paychecks are cashed while schools are shuttered and children are left holding the textbooks, unable to read them.

Happy Birthday Milton Friedman, ‘Father of School Vouchers’

BY Matt Kibbe

Today, the late Noble-Prize winning economist and one of the greatest freedom fighter of our lifetime Milton Friedman would have celebrated his 98th birthday. By far, the most admired trait of Friedman was his presentation of the ideas of liberty. As one of the true geniuses of the 20th century, he was an excellent communicator who successfully explained complex economic theories in a simple manner. He was a spokesman for capitalism who inspired countless individuals through his intelligence and kindness.

Flake’s Still Up for Appropriations Spot

BY Amanda Carpenter

Although earmark hawk Rep. Jeff Flake (R.-Ariz.) may be a long-shot for the spot, he’s is still in the running to be appointed to the House Appropriations Committee. When Rep. Roger Wicker (R.-Miss.) left the House to fill Sen. Trent Lott’s empty Senate seat, he left an open seat on the powerful Appropriations Committee. Flake, a long time opponent of pork barrel spending, has aggressively campaigned for the position and has been loudly backed by movement conservatives. But for those very reasons many House Republicans are reluctant to put him on the committee.

Good News for People Who Like Bad News

BY Peter Suderman

When it comes to the economy, no one likes bad news—no one, that is, except for liberal politicians. Why? Because liberals rely on bad news to sell their policies of choice. In fact, their whole approach to the economy is almost entirely predicated on it. From health care to social security to global warming, their number one tactic is to appeal to anxiety, fear, and worry. It's in their political interests to convince the public that things are bad, very bad—and probably going to get worse.

Kingmakers Eye Thompson

BY Amanda Carpenter

Fred Thompson’s forthcoming announcement that he will seek the Republican nomination for President will push pollsters and conservative kingmakers to increase their scrutiny of the former Tennessee senator. As an unofficial candidate Thompson dominated polls throughout the summer season of presidential campaigning. A September 5 Rasmussen poll found Thompson polling 23% among likely Republican primary voters. Thompson was only a point behind Republican front-runner Rudy Giuliani.

Fear and Loathing at Live Earth

BY Matt Kibbe

“I think that they should take a look at what their companies are doing and just ask themselves as human beings whether or not this is the way they want to spend their lives, if this is the way they want to earn a living, if this is the kind of contribution they want to make to the society in which we live.” -- Al Gore

The Gospel of Gore

BY Amanda Carpenter

If Al Gore wore a high-collared black suit instead of a polo shirt and jeans to the Washington, D.C. Live Earth concert, he might have been mistaken for a preacher. He gave a brief sermon Saturday, July 7 on global warming with a solemn opening. “Today we are gathered on all seven continents and eight giant concerts and in 10,000 other gatherings, many as large as this one, two billion people, we are gathered, with one message.”
