Check out the great photos!

On September 19th, FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey traveled to Iowa to promote the Freedom Agenda of personal retirement accounts, a flat tax and fundamental budget process reform. He was accompanied by President and CEO Matt Kibbe, Press Secretary Adam Brandon and Grassroots Manager Brendan Steinhauser.

Chairman Armey was invited to be the keynote speaker at an event hosted by Iowans for Discounted Taxes. The top FreedomWorks activists in the Des Moines area joined with IDT and various elected officials to hear Armey speak about the state of the fiscal crisis in Washington.

Armey was interviewed by numerous reporters and radio hosts, including Mike Glover of the Associated Press, whose story was picked up in over 50 news media outlets.  Armey was a guest on Jan Michaels’s morning talk show on WHO 1040.  Prior to the event, Armey was a guest on Jamie Johnson’s talk show on the Faith and Freedom Network in the Des Moines area.

Armey came to Iowa to urge its citizens to press politicians who come into the state to ask for their support for President. He told those in attendance that he is seeking to create a “constituency of expectations” whereby citizens ask tough questions of those running for the most important job in the nation.  Armey spent most of his time talking about the impending retirement security crisis, and how it will affect young workers. He offered that the solution to the problem is creating a system that allows people the option of personal accounts that they own, control and can pass on to loved ones.

Armey noted the fairness and efficiency of a flat tax, saying that fundamentally reforming the tax code would actually increase government revenue along with economic growth.  And he discussed the outrageous spending policies of politicians in Washington, noting that earmarks have gotten out of hand over the years.

Armey talked about keeping the Reagan Revolution and the Contract with America alive by returning to conservative principles of fiscals discipline, individual responsibility and the advance of liberty.  His ideas were well-received by the attendees, many of whom are very influential in state politics. Let’s just hope that those seeking to win the Presidency were paying attention.
