FreedomWorks’ Letter to House: Cosponsor RSC Budget

Dear Representative,

On behalf of hundreds of thousands of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to cosponsor H. Con. Res. 281, the budget plan for fiscal year 2011 offered by the Republican Study Committee (RSC).  The Democrats who control the House of Representatives have announced they will not produce a budget this year, despite previously saying enacting a budget is “the most basic responsibility of governing” and “if you can’t budget, you can’t govern.”  Fortunately, the RSC has filled this void and offered a detailed, budget balancing blue print for every fiscally responsible member of Congress to support.

With an estimated $1.5 trillion deficit in 2009 and the national debt now over $13 trillion, the federal government must take immediate action to curb spending.  The only current alternative to the RSC plan is the “budget” offered by the Obama administration.  When the RSC plan is compared to the Obama administration’s proposal, it becomes clear that the RSC plan puts us back on the path to prosperity while the President’s plan continues our nation on the path to economic ruin.  And congressional Democrats plan not to have a plan at all.

Under President Obama’s budget, the annual federal deficit is projected to still be over $1 trillion in 2020.  His plan would run $8.5 trillion in deficits over the next decade.  The RSC proposal, however, balances the budget within ten years and actually achieves budget surpluses in 2019 and 2020.  While we would like to see more rapid spending cuts to bring about surpluses sooner, what the RSC has presented is a budget that should draw broad support from all but those on the far-left who support the radical spending increases we have seen in recent years.

While the Obama budget calls for job-killing tax hikes, the RSC proposal does the opposite.  Over the next ten years, the Obama budget would raise taxes by nearly $3 trillion.  The RSC budget, on the other hand, would make all of the 2001 and 2003 tax relief permanent.  It would also make the Alternative Minimum Tax “patch” permanent.  Rather than burdening Americans with harmful taxes in the middle of a recession, the RSC budget would extend tax relief for American families and businesses by $1.7 trillion over the first five years, helping spur the private sector job creation we so desperately need.

After comparing the RSC budget to the alternative options—either no budget plan from congressional Democrats or the Obama administration’s call for a continuation of radically high spending levels—it is clear the RSC proposal is best for America.  Now is the time to act.  I urge you to cosponsor the RSC budget proposal today.  Our country’s future depends upon you.
