Stop the Subprime Mortgage Nonsense

I wanted to pass along a recent op-ed that I published in The Washington Times about a subprime mortgage bill being considered by the U.S. Senate. Politicians need to realize that this plan is a bailout that will stick taxpayers with the bill. The legislation would only make it more difficult and expensive for consumers to get a new home.

Help Hold the Line Against SCHIP Expansion

Soon Congress will take up the SCHIP expansion bill that was vetoed by President Bush. Congress needs to uphold the president's veto of this bill and prevent a serious move towards socialized medicine. The SCHIP program was meant to cover poor children, but Congress is trying to move adults into government-run health care. As if this wasn't bad enough, the proposed $35 billion expansion would be funded by yet another huge tax hike! This time, the target is smokers, to the tune of 61 cents per pack.

CSE Salutes Anti-Tax Organizing Efforts Among Alabama Political Parties

February letter from Alabama GOP argues for the politics and principles of lower taxes.

After voters overwhelmingly crushed a billion dollar state tax increase at the polls last September, Alabama's political class continues to come to terms with the new anti-tax reality. CSE salutes elected officials, both Republicans and Democrats, who oppose high taxes and more spending.

The Alabama debate featured a split in the state Republican Party, as a pro-tax GOP Governor and some legislators squared off against the anti-tax party faithful.

Shelby one of the lone voices in Congress still pushing flat tax

Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby belonged to a different party and served in a different chamber when he first floated the idea of a flat tax more than two decades ago to little fanfare.

The good news for Shelby is that with President Bush fresh off a re-election victory and Republicans firmly in control of Congress, the stars could be aligned for major legislative change to appease conservatives. The bad news: It doesn't appear tax reform is where party leaders intend to start.
