Crist Holds Key to Fixing Florida’s Broken Insurance System

FreedomWorks urges governor to sign legislation that will take steps to relieve the state’s insurance nightmare.

Tallahasse, FL – Whether or not Florida’s insurance system gets on the road to recovery is now a question only Governor Charlie Crist can answer.

HB 1171, legislation that would take positive steps towards addressing the state’s current insurance nightmare by allowing more private companies to compete with the state-run Citizens Property Insurance Corporation and giving Florida consumers greater choice in the insurance marketplace, has passed out of the Florida Legislature and now awaits action by the governor.

FreedomWorks Activists Testify as Insurance Reform Bill Moves Forward in the House

House General Government Policy Council to vote on House Bill 1171, which would allow consumers to purchase insurance policies protected against assessments in the wake of a major hurricane.

Tallahassee, FL - Florida’s government run Citizens Property Insurance Corporation is putting the state at risk of bankruptcy in the even of a catastrophic hurricane.  Citizens has become the largest insurer in the state by under-pricing the risks of a major catastrophe, even though the possibility of a significant hurricane is always looming.  The nation’s major insurers have pulled out of the state—Allstate, Nationwide, Prudential, USAA, and most recently State Farm, which had previously insured more than a million homeowners across the Florida.

CPAC Florida Recap

Last week’s CPAC event in Orlando, attended by thousands of Florida conservatives, was a huge success for FreedomWorks and our supporters. More than 2,500 copies of our activist handbook, Rules for Patriots, were distributed at our exhibition booth, along with bumper magnets, brochures and handouts on the EPA Train Wreck. Several hundred attendees signed up to join the FreedomWorks team and hundreds more who are already part of our growing grassroots network stopped by to say hello to Chairman Dick Armey and President Matt Kibbe.

Woman's year-ago protest launched tea party movement in Florida

Florida politics haven't been the same since a fleeting bipartisan semi-hug between President Obama and Gov. Charlie Crist at a stimulus rally in Fort Myers one year ago today.

National politics have changed as well — and the same Fort Myers event provided a little-noticed sneak preview of the tea party protests that have since altered that landscape.
