Help Fight Higher Taxes in Illinois

With all of the political drama in Illinois these days, it might be easy to forget the real fiscal problems the state is facing.  The state’s budget deficit is projected to be $2.5 billion with an additional $4 billion in unpaid bills. But Illinois is by no means alone in this problem.  Like many other states across the country, spending has been skyrocketing at an unsustainable pace and now, with its pockets empty, the state government is looking to taxpayers for a handout.

Cigarette tax hikes are here again! This is another issue where politicians just never learn. Despite the fact that cigarette tax hikes are unfair and historically haven’t brought in the revenue officials badly want, Illinois is about to try anyway.

Help Hold the Line Against SCHIP Expansion

Soon Congress will take up the SCHIP expansion bill that was vetoed by President Bush. Congress needs to uphold the president's veto of this bill and prevent a serious move towards socialized medicine. The SCHIP program was meant to cover poor children, but Congress is trying to move adults into government-run health care. As if this wasn't bad enough, the proposed $35 billion expansion would be funded by yet another huge tax hike! This time, the target is smokers, to the tune of 61 cents per pack.

Stop the Latest Tax Hike Scheme in Illinois

The Illinois Senate is considering a massive $0.90 per pack increase on cigarettes while also giving localities the option to raise taxes by as much as $2.00 per pack. If passed, this tax could raise the cost of a pack of cigarettes to nearly $9 in the city of Chicago.

The liberal tax-and-spend bunch is at it again – this time with a regressive tax hike scheme that would give Chicago-area residents and visitors the blues.

The plan proposed by Cook County Board President John Stroger would double the tax on cigarettes from $1 to $2 per pack, plus extend the tax to other tobacco products including cigars and chewing tobacco. It would also increase taxes on hotel stays by 2%.

COOK COUNTY, IL. The Illinois chapter of FreedomWorks is alerting its membership in the Chicago area about a tax hike scheme that is being propagated by Cook County Board President John Stroger. The plan would double the tax on cigarettes from $1 to $2 per pack, plus extend the tax to other tobacco products including cigars and chewing tobacco. It would also increase taxes on hotel stays by 2 percent.

FreedomWorks Applauds Illinois Supreme Court Decision

Ruling on auto aftermarket parts case is an important step towards legal reform.

On August 18, the Illinois Supreme Court overturned a $1.06 billion class action judgment by a lower court (Avery et al. v State Farm) addressing the use of automobile collision repair parts by insurers. The case is an important victory for consumers and an important step toward a more sensible legal system.
