Businesses don’t come to Minnesota for the winters, but they do come, and thrive in states where there aren’t burdensome regulations. States that let customers determine how they want businesses to be run are the places where real growth and innovation occur – something that Minnesota could use more of.

Help Hold the Line Against SCHIP Expansion

Soon Congress will take up the SCHIP expansion bill that was vetoed by President Bush. Congress needs to uphold the president's veto of this bill and prevent a serious move towards socialized medicine. The SCHIP program was meant to cover poor children, but Congress is trying to move adults into government-run health care. As if this wasn't bad enough, the proposed $35 billion expansion would be funded by yet another huge tax hike! This time, the target is smokers, to the tune of 61 cents per pack.

At last, Congress may slow down the DM&E

Bills would require its approval for huge federal loan.

Finally, the DM&E railroad project is headed for the independent review it needed long, long ago.
Under legislation introduced in both the U.S. House and Senate, Congress will have to sign off before the DM&E can receive the $2.3 billion federal loan it needs to lay high-speed rail from Wyoming to Winona (and right through downtown Rochester). Unlike the industry-friendly Surface Transportation Board and Federal Railroad Administration, Congress is likely to focus on key questions:
