Tell the Virginia General Assembly: No New Taxes!

Lawmakers in Virginia are considering a plan to increase the state cigarette tax by 30 cents per pack.  This is a 100% increase in the rate of the current tax and it would cause a host of unintended consequences.

FreedomWorks Calls on Virginia to Cut the Budget, Not Raise Taxes

100 percent jump in cigarette tax would hurt poor and small businesses, fail to solve budget problem.

When states are faced with a budget deficit, the fiscally prudent solution is to tighten the budget and cut bureaucratic waste before increasing taxes on strapped citizens. Virginia is currently facing a $2 billion budget shortfall, which is due in part to over-spending when times were good. FreedomWorks is disappointed that Gov. Timothy Kaine has proposed a 100 percent increase in the state cigarette tax.

About 150 people gathered in the Gates County Courthouse Thursday morning, including representatives of FreedomWorks and the Southern Coalition for Social Justice.

"Yes, absolutely, we can stop this," Kathy Hartkopf, a legislative liaison for FreedomWorks, told the group.
