March Freedom Artist: Frank Norton

I first met Mr. Frank Norton at a Folk art festival in Commerce, Georgia in 2014. He walked into my booth at the end of the last day of the festival and it wasn't long before we were energetically discussing American symbolism in art. Mr. Norton collects regional folk art and paintings of flags. At the time, I did not realize he is himself a painter.

February Freedom Artist: Tanya Slate

I have to admit, I'm a little biased in favor of Tanya's mixed media work. She stands out among our many talented artists at Liberatchik for having developed an edgy, contemporary style that remains good art. In addition, much of her work conveys a strong political or philosophical message without being trite or jaded. One of the biggest challenges a conservative or libertarian artist can face is successfully injecting ideas into their work. Tanya nails it!

January Freedom Artist: Ashley Norfleet

Illustrators are unique among visual artists in their use of storytelling to portray a complex ideology or concept. Many, like our January Artist, utilize quotes and phrases in their art to accentuate finer concepts or highlight specific ideas they want to express to the viewer. Some use a progression of imagery, complex compositions that move the viewer from one idea to the next, or single concepts to drive home a particular concept. A fellow SCAD graduate, Ashley is an artist whose work I have seen progress over nearly two decades. Her style is very painterly and ephemeral. One could as easily imagine her illustrations decorating the pages of a fine children's book as the sparse walls of an upscale gallery.

Freedom Art: Wildlife Painter David Joyner

As we usher in spring down here in the south, I thought I would take the opportunity to share some art that focuses on nature without the environmental dogma that is so rampant in the art community. David Joyner is a self-taught artist from my home state of Florida. Much of his work reflects aquatic themes and the vibrant colors of his world. As always, I am pleased to share art with you that illustrates the beauty and of realism.

Freedom Art: Kathy Graybill's Folk Art

We've been working hard to break down political barriers in the art world. This month at Liberatchik, we're featuring the work of folk artist Kathy Graybill. Kathy has been one of the most directly inspirational artists I have met over the years. Her beautiful and complex body of work has motivated me to pursue an artistic avenue that I previously thought impractical – hand painted furniture and primitives. This summer, I drove down to Atlanta for the 21st annual Folk Fest. Kathy and her husband were there with a wide array of their painted signs and furniture. Seeing an entire booth of her beautiful work was intimidating and overwhelming – but also inspiring. I can’t even begin to imagine the number of hours invested in the layering of the paints and glazes applied to the pieces.
