To Give the Devil the Benefit of the Law

At the conclusion of his opening statement regarding impeachment before the House Judiciary Committee on December 4th, Professor Jonathan Turley mentioned a famous scene from the 1966 film A Man for All Seasons. In this particular scene, Sir Thomas More -- the venerated English lawyer and statesman who famously opposed the tyranny of King Henry VIII -- is criticized by his son-in-law, William Roper, for putting the law before morality and “God’s law.” In a brilliant retort, More asks Roper if he would “cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?” Roper responds that he would “cut down every law in England to do that!”

House Judiciary's Sham "Impeachment Inquiry" Violates House Rules and Any Notion of Due Process

On Thursday, the House Judiciary Committee will consider a resolution that would establish the parameters of an impeachment investigation against President Donald Trump. The resolution is far outside the norm in the modern practice of impeachment in the House of Representatives. Essentially, Democrats on the committee are launching pseudo-impeachment inquiry without any authorization to do so. For more information on the history of impeachment, see Presidential Impeachment in History and Procedure, published by FreedomWorks in March 2019. This issue brief was co-authored by Bob Barr, who served in the House from 1995 to 2003 and was an impeachment manager during the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.
