Support the CREATES Act, H.R. 965 and S. 340

On behalf of our activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and senators and ask them to support the CREATES Act, H.R. 965 and S. 340. Introduced in the House by Reps. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) and Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wisc.) and in the Senate by Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Mike Lee (R-Utah), and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), the CREATES Act would lower prescription drug prices by giving competitors greater standing to sue pharmaceutical companies for predatory, monopolistic practices.

House Judiciary Committee to Consider Legislation to Protect Property Owners from Eminent Domain Abuse

The issue of eminent domain is receiving renewed interest thanks to a new movie about Susette Kelo, whose property was taken by the City of New London, Connecticut to enhance the city’s tax base. The movie, Little Pink House, was recently released in select theaters across the country. Conservative columnist George Will wrote that the movie, which was directed by Courtney Balaker and co-produced by Ted Balaker, “will win the Oscar for best picture if Hollywood’s political preening contains even a scintilla of sincerity about speaking truth to power.”

Support the No Regulation Without Representation Act, H.R. 2887

On behalf of our activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and urge him or her to cosponsor the No Regulation Without Representation Act, H.R. 2887, introduced by Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.). The bill would codify a 1992 Supreme Court decision preventing cross-border taxation when a business does not have a physical location in which the consumer resides.

Congress Should Learn from States on Civil Asset Forfeiture

The Ohio Legislature recently joined the growing ranks of states to pass civil asset forfeiture reform. More than a year in the making, both chambers passed, by overwhelming margins, House Bill 347, which, in most instances, requires a criminal conviction for the state to permanently seize property from an individual.

Due Process Act Will Protect Innocent People from Government Overreach

Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) introduced legislation Wednesday that would reform federal civil asset forfeiture laws, offering key protections to innocent people whose property is seized by the government. The Deterring Undue Enforcement by Protecting Rights of Citizens from Excessive Searches and Seizures Act (H.R. 5283), or Due Process Act, is the most significant, if not first, major reform of federal forfeiture laws since 2000, when Congress passed the Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act.

The SAFE Justice Act would bring groundbreaking reforms enacted by conservative states to the federal government

Thursday was a huge day for anyone following the debate and movement on justice reform, the interest in which has grown substantially in recent days. Out of nowhere, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) gave his support for, perhaps, the most comprehensive justice reform bill proposed in the current Congress.
