Sample Constituent Letter to Senator Murray for S.353

Date:_____________

The Honorable Patty Murray

United States Senate

Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Murray:

I am writing today to urge you to vote for S. 353, the Class Action Fairness Act of 1999, when it is introduced to the floor of the Senate. Trial lawyers have been abusing the state-based class action system by filing frivolous lawsuits for far too long. Some of these questionable claims are seen for the get rich quick scams they are and thrown out of court, but others result in awards of millions of dollars, which are paid for with increased prices for goods and services by the average consumer.

I recognize that not all class action litigation is frivolous in nature, but trial lawyers have begun to exploit what can be a useful legal device. It seems that trial lawyers have been granted a license to steal from legitimate businesses, both large and small, while consumers are left to foot the bill. I even read about one example where lawyers sued a cereal manufacturer over a non-toxic food additive and received $2 million in fees, while the people they supposedly represented each got a coupon for a free box of cereal! That’s not justice.

The Class Action Fairness Act of 1999 is a modest attempt to return our legal system to decent, honest Americans with real grievances. Again, I urge you to consider adding your support to this worthy piece of common sense legislation, and look forward to hearing your views on the subject in your reply.

Thank you for your consideration and reply.

Sincerely,
