2014 Common Core Legislation Round-Up (10th Update)

Here’s the latest round of Common Core legislation that has been filed. There’s too many to do individual articles so I wanted to get caught up and mention them in one article. As a recap I’ll also mention bills I’ve already written about. I’m sure I’m also missing legislation, my apologies if I miss your state. Taking in Common Core news (and my inbox) is like drinking from a fire hose. If I missed something leave a comment and I will add it—this is a work in progress.

Losing Literacy

Until WWII, American children learned to read by utilizing phonics. Words were not learned by memorization but rather, children learned that each letter had a corresponding sound. When put together with other sounds, a word was made. This method had proved to be extraordinarily successful since America’s founding and two centuries beyond. It was this method that allowed Benjamin Franklin to be a proficient reader before ever stepping foot into a classroom.

The U.S. Education System: What Went Wrong? Part III

A great thing about being American is that if you are unhappy with how things are run in one state, you are free to move to 49 others.  The same goes for businesses. If you are unsatisfied with one company, you can take your money to another establishment.

Common Core Destroys School Choice

An important part of why many parents favor school choice is it increases the chances their kids will get into a good college. Private school students and homeschoolers regularly score higher on college entrance exams than most public school children.

The U.S. Education System: What Went Wrong? Part II

Of all the educational atrocities that have come to pass since our country’s infancy, the most tragic of all occurred when we took the focus off of the individual. The Founders believed that every individual citizen, no matter their circumstance, could become whatever they wanted if they were willing to work for it

The U.S. Education System: What Went Wrong? Part I

Something is seriously wrong with our education system. But before we can prescribe any cures we must understand the ailment. Our education problems are too big for sound bites. The system’s faults are too complex for mere political rhetoric. As such, I will be writing a few different blog posts to explain what exactly went wrong with our education system.
