Divided government has kept budget deficits in check, but a spending explosion is on the horizon

The Congressional Budget Office has released its annual budget outlook for the next decade, showing that the budget deficit will continue to fall in the current fiscal year, as well as next year, before gradually beginning to rise steadily again, thereafter. The media mostly talking about this aspect of the report. The Associated Press, for example, ran with the headline: "CBO: Budget deficit to shrink to lowest level since Obama took office."

The real State of the Union response was delivered by Rand Paul

Being tasked with a response to the State of the Union address isn't easy. The message, usually given by a fresh face, is carefully crafted to fluff up a party's priorities for the coming months, as well as offer Americans a distinction between their agenda and what the president offered them earlier in the evening.

Barack Obama is in complete denial about the United States' ominous fiscal path

In addition to proposing an onslaught of spending increases and tax hikes in his sixth State of the Union address, President Barack Obama will, according to The New York Times, "effectively declare victory over the economic hard times that dominated his first six years in office and advocate using the nation’s healthier finances to tackle long-deferred issues like education and income inequality."

Chuck Schumer: Democrats need to rally behind "strong and active government"

It's a little late for a mea culpa on ObamaCare, but Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) offered one during a speech at the National Press Club on Tuesday. Well, sort of. The third-highest ranking Senate Democrat says that his party should've focused on the economy in 2009 rather than ramming ObamaCare through Congress.

Will a New Congress Take the Economy Seriously?

In Tuesday's historic elections many based their decisions in the voting booth on the economic performance of Obama and the Democrat controlled Senate. Unfortunately for the president, the record has been bleak, and the long term U.S. economic outlook remains problematic. While some have touted the fact that deficits have shrunk, the real problem is the mounting long term debt, which continues to be worrisome, as does the anemic economic recovery and lingering unemployment. While the new Congress offers an opportunity for fresh thinking on economic problems, implementing solutions may be challenging, given a recalcitrant Obama administration and the temptations of short-run political expediency versus long run reforms.

Regulations Are Stifling Economic Growth

As the size and scope of government have expanded, regulators have come to play a much larger role in our day-to-day lives. The advent of the administrative state has created a web of regulations covering everything from design standards for electric appliances to new rules that require hotels and restaurants to accommodate miniature horses as service animals. All too often, common sense is being replaced with exacting statutes and regulations that dictate very specific forms of compliance.

Hidden Story Behind Unemployment Rates

On Friday, May 2, the White House was happy to announce the lowest US unemployment rate since September 2008. As reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with 288,000 nonfarm jobs added to the economy, the unemployment rate dropped from 6.7% to 6.3% in April 2014.

As Economy Stalls, Democrats Remain Out Of Touch With Voters

Economists are now reporting what we all know already - America's economic growth has ground to a halt. Wednesday's report from the Commerce Department was bleak. The expected growth in GDP was 1.1%, but the Commerce Department is now reporting a rate of growth of only 0.1%. This has been felt for a long time by average Americans. According to a Gallup poll, economic problems dominate in the question of the most important problem facing the nation today. This makes the priorities championed by Democrats all the more puzzling. As we struggle to sustain an economic recovery that has been charitably described as "choppy", Democrats continue to push an agenda that is out of touch and fails to solve the underlying problems.
