The Common Core Fight is On in Tennessee

Common Core is awfully unpopular for something that’s supposed to be so great. State after state is trying to keep academic freedom alive, and Tennessee is joining that list. Hearings have been held in the Volunteer State, and the fight is on.

Governor Rick Scott Withdraws Florida from Common Core Test

Today, Florida Governor Rick Scott fought for children in his state and for the 10th Amendment in one fell swoop. He did this by removing Florida from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARC), the consortium creating Common Core tests, of which Florida was the fiscal agent.  Scott’s executive order began:

Common Core Testing Battle in California

In Los Angeles, there’s an unusual fight over Common Core. This fight is about testing before implementation. Although it is set to be implemented in the 2014-15 school year, a proposed bill (AB 484) was supposed to have their standardized testing align with those standards this year.

Profiles in Education: Peyton and Eric, a Homeschool Family of Six

Peyton and Eric never thought they would be homeschool parents. Having both been educated in traditional public schools, Peyton had some common misconceptions about homeschooling. In fact, she says she never entertained the idea of homeschooling because "I didn't want my kids to be dumb.”

Textbooks and Naughty Books in Common Core

Parents should be cautious about that to which their kids are exposed, especially in an environment where parental supervision isn't present. At home, television channels can be blocked, web content can be monitored, and most parents are hopefully keeping track of what their kids are reading. However, a lot of parents don’t apply this scrutiny to textbooks being used in the local schools. When one considers what is happening with textbook standards under Common Core, it’s time for that to change.

Common Core vs. Autonomy: It's All About the Money

Here at FreedomWorks, we….well, we know that freedom works. We know that, if the federal government would leave us alone and let market forces work, the American people would flourish and thrive.  Whether it's the NSA revelations, the IRS scandal, or the imposing takeover of our health care system, Americans are seeing a grand expansion of federal control.

Charter Schools Up for a Fight in New York City

Choice creates competition, and competition will lead to public schools losing their monopolies on young minds.  This of course is a very good thing, as it means better educations for every American child.

Federal Government Punishes Louisiana Children

The U.S. Department of Justice must not have much going on these days. There aren’t really any other conclusions to draw considering that they’re spending their time working on keeping children in failing schools. That’s right, the Louisiana Department of Justice has sued the state of Louisiana over school vouchers.

Liberal Group Bars Alabama Schoolhouse Door

The civil rights issue of our era is improving America’s schools. It is essential that all kids, rich and poor, have the chance to achieve the American dream. To work toward that end, Gov. Robert Bentley recently signed the Alabama Accountability Act. The school choice package allows families with children attending failing schools to receive tax credits to help pay for attendance at a different public school or private school.
