Taxpayers Lose on Shallow Loss Entitlement

This week, I decided to research the Farm Bill to write a little bit about some of the “reforms” House Republicans who support the bill are so proud of. The CBO estimates savings of $35 billion over the next ten years (vs. the current baseline). The CBO is also notorious for underestimating costs, and it looks like this time won’t be any different.

Fighting for Food Freedom

This summer has been one of valuable education and clarification for me. In writing my last post on PolyFace Farms, I mentioned that I am spending the summer with friends on their working farm, Dazi Acres.

Revised House Farm Bill: See How Your Reps. Voted Here

Today, the House Republican leadership pushed through a new version of the Farm Bill, just a few weeks after an earlier version of the bill failed spectacularly on the floor. It succeeded in passing, 216-208, attracting the majority of Republicans in spite of the fact that it contained no reforms at all that actually improved the bill or reduced its abundance of waste and corporate welfare. You can see the roll call vote HERE.

Key Vote NO on the New House Farm Bill

As one of our millions of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to contact your representative and urge him or her to vote NO on new House Farm Bill, H.R. 2642.House Leadership does deserve some slight praise for bringing forth a Farm Bill that is separate from the food stamp provisions that have served for decades as a mammoth earmark to attract Democratic support for the bill. However, splitting the food stamps and farm bill is a means to reform, not an end in itself.

Splitting the Farm Bill is Only the First Step Towards Reforms

Leading up to the fortunate failure of the Farm Bill on the floor of the House in June, conservatives have been urging Congress to separate the agricultural parts of the bill from the food stamp programs so that each major program could be debated and reformed on its own merits. The House leadership has responded by actually splitting the bill and offering an agriculture-only bill, which is an excellent move on their part.
