Help Us Defeat the National Soda Tax

During the presidential campaign of 2008, Barack Obama pledged that those making below $250,000 would not see their taxes go up one dime. He promised to cut taxes for the middle class and poor people. But if his friends in Congress get their way, President Obama will have a tough decision to make – whether to break his campaign pledge again in the form of higher taxes on soda and “sugary drinks” like sports and energy drinks.

The Health Care Fight

Steve Forbes new article, "The Fight" does an excellent job of explaining how important the health care fight will be.  Check out the article.  Here are some quotes from it:

Prelude to ObamaCare

Without intending to, today's New York Times exposes the inherent problems with government rationed health care services, with lobbyists jockeying for advantage in the Medicare reimbursement game.  Already a dominant purchaser of health services, Medicare has created a shortage of primary physicians by cutting reimbursements.  Now imagine a world where all Americans are herded into Medicare....  Infinite demand for free services, skyrocketing costs, and some Grey Suited Soviet with a clip board determining if the medical procedure you need to live is worth the cost to the Treasury.

Reconciliation, What Is It?

If you've been paying attention to what's going on in Washington recently, you've probably heard the word "reconciliation".  What is it?  It's a legislative process intended to allow a budget bill to be considered without filibuster.  In the Senate, it restricts debate to 20 hours and amendments are limited.  Without the option of filibuster, a bill in the Senate would only require 51 votes to pass.  A super majority of 60 votes is required to end a filibuster to move legislation normally.

FreedomWorks Launches Campaign Against Secret Socialized Medicine Provision in Budget

Washington, DC –  Included in President Obama’s budget is a $635 billion ‘down payment’ for health care reform.  President Obama does not get into details on what his healthcare reform would be, but he never the less asks for hundreds of billions of dollars to be pre-approved for it.  This money would no doubt be used to centralize health care decisions with bureaucrats in Washington and expand bankrupt entitlements programs.

Key Vote "No" H.R. 1: American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009

On behalf of hundreds of thousands of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to vote NO on H.R. 1: American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  The compromises behind closed doors this week have made the bill no less acceptable to anyone who values fiscal responsibility and loves freedom. It is highly irresponsible of Congress to rush through a spending bill of this tremendous magnitude without taking the time to fully consider all its parts and give the public time for input.  In fact, the bill, which weighs in at over 1,000 pages, was only made available to Congress at 11 p.m. last night.  This is hardly the new era of transparency and openness promised by the new administration and provides plenty of cover for legislators to slip in their favorite pork projects.

McCain and the Free Market

Dean Baker is technically correct to say that John McCain "doesn't support free-market health care," but mostly in the sense that absolutely everyone who supports, even grudgingly, leaving some of the current government health-care funding and regulatory infrastructure in place doesn't support free-market health care.
