Media Advisory: Opponents of I-884 Available for Comment

We are confident that if the voters understand the true facts of Initiative 884, it will be rejected in the voting booth. The proponents of I-884 have spent over three million dollars promoting misleading information. The ballot title of I-884 wrongly states that the measure will only increase the sales tax 1% when if fact it will increase the state sales tax from 6.5% to 7.5%, a 15.4% increase. Further, commercial advertisements promote an education trust fund that is simply a statutory account. They imply that passage of I-884 will guarantee more money will be spent on education without mentioning the legislature’s ability to amend any initiative or even the source of the new funds.

We have waged a strong grassroots campaign to spread our message and have activated hundreds of volunteers across the state to work phones, doorbell, host house parties, and speak at community events. Despite being outspent 76 to 1, we have been able to remain even in the polls leading up to the election and are hopeful the voters will see through the empty promises of Initiative 884.

Campaign spokesmen will attend the election night party at the Meydenbauer Conference Center in Bellevue and will be available for interviews and commentary.
