FreedomWorks Members Attack Liberal Myths on Social Security Reform

FreedomWorks members are working hard to educate politicans and the general public on the benefits of Social Security reform. At a recent town hall meeting hosted by Representative Brad Miller (NC-13) and Representative David Price (NC-4), FreedomWorks activists debunked liberal myths about reform through Personal Retirement Accounts (PRAs).

The town hall took place last week in Raleigh, North Carolina at Meredith College. The crowd was larger than expected with about 150 people— most of them avidly supporting personal accounts. Wearing pro-reform t-shirts and stickers, about 25 North Carolina FreedomWorks members let Rep. Brad Miller and Rep. David Price know that their constituents support President Bush’s plan to save Social Security.

At the event, activists passed out Social Security reform booklets that told attendees the truth about PRAs. The booklets explain how Social Security will run into the red in just 13 years and why personal accounts are the best way to avoid massive benefit cuts or tax hikes. When Reps. Miller and Price launched misleading claims about reduced benefits for younger workers, the audience was ready: almost all of the people asking questions supported Social Security reform.

After the town hall, FreedomWorks Volunteer Leader Joyce Krawiec pointedly asked Rep. David Price why he supported personal accounts during the Clinton administration but opposes them now. Rep. David Price denied Joyce’s claim, and then dodged the question when Joyce presented him with a transcript with his past public remarks advocating PRAs.

North Carolina FreedomWorks Director Allen Page commented on the event:

“It’s amazing how quickly audience members agreed with the President’s plan after listening to our activists and reading our Social Security booklets. FreedomWorks will make sure to attend more town halls and let Congress know that America wants to own its future.”

Volunteer Leader Joyce Krawiec also noted:

“We’re keeping the pressure on Congress to pass Social Security reform. Once people understand the facts about PRAs— for example, the fact that personal accounts can be passed on to your children— they usually support reform. That’s why it’s important that FreedomWorks continues to talk to fellow citizens and let them know why they should support personal accounts.”
