A View from the Frontlines: FreedomWorks North Carolina Fights Tax Hike

Governor Mike Easley wants to target smokers with a 45-cent per pack cigarette tax increase over the next two years – 35-cent per pack increase this year and 10 cents next year. If the tax is adopted, smokers will have to pay $5.00 in state excise taxes alone on every carton of cigarettes they purchase.

The cigarette tax advantage North Carolina has enjoyed for so many years over surrounding states will be gone. North Carolina will not only lose tobacco purchases by out-of-state smokers, but all the other things they buy while in our state. This smoker tax increase poses a danger to every citizen in North Carolina. That’s why FreedomWorks members are working hard to stop this tax hike!
