The New Luddites

Today, Ned Ludd and his followers are best known from the term Luddite: a much needed contribution to the English language that expresses fear or hatred of technology. But while the word has since taken on the connotations of a back-to-nature, Druidic-like disdain for modernity, it should be remembered that the original motivations for the Luddite movement were purely economic. The textile artisans saw their livelihood threatened by advances in mechanization, and lashed out to protect their own interests.

Senate Vote-a-Rama - See How Your Senators Voted on Key Amendments Here!

Last Friday, the Senate voted on dozens of amendments to their budget resolution before eventually (narrowly) passing the budget itself. This frenzy of amendments, known as a "vote-a-rama", gave many Senators a chance to force their colleagues onto the record on many key issues that have not come up for a vote in the Senate in years.Among the most important (and revealing) votes were on Medicare reform, internet sales taxes, ObamaCare repeal, carbon taxes, and Senator Rand Paul's budget plan.

Dear FreedomWorks member,As one of our millions of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to contact your U.S. Senators and urge them to vote NO on any amendment to the Senate budget that attempts to create a deficit-neutral reserve fund dealing with the collection of state sales and use taxes. The aim of such an amendment is to serve as a proxy vote for an internet sales tax scheme such as the Marketplace Fairness Act.

Senate Republicans Push for Internet Sales Taxes

Despite their lip service to cutting taxes, a handful of Republican senators are pushing for a sales tax on Internet purchases. Senator Mike Enzi of Wyoming has introduced the so-called Marketplace Fairness Act that would create a new national online tax that would take away more of our money and freedom. The Republican cosponsors of S. 1832 are Sens. Lamar Alexander, Roy Blunt, John Boozman, and Bob Corker. These Internet sales tax schemes are nothing new but greedy politicians seem more determined than ever to pass it this year.
