Rand Paul's Latest Stand Has Bought Another Chance for Real Surveillance Reform

The past week has seen an epic, historic struggle on the Senate floor over the line between the surveillance state and Americans' 4th Amendment rights. Senator Rand Paul and a handful of reform-minded colleagues from both parties are continuing to block any effort to let the government mass surveillance authorities be renewed without strong protections for Americans' right to due process.

Passionate Youth Stand with Rand to End Mass Surveillance

Yesterday, Senator Rand Paul proved yet again that he is dedicated to upholding the Constitution. For eleven hours, the Kentucky Senator claimed the senate floor to filibuster the reauthorization of the Patriot Act, which permits mass surveillance of American citizens. Warrantless spying and bulk data collection has been a massive infringement on our basic fourth amendment rights. Even 65% of American adults believe there are not adequate limits on the telephone and internet data that the government collects, according to a recent Pew poll.

Rand Paul made the constitutional conservative case for justice reform in his nearly 11-hour filibuster

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) offered a nearly 11-hour constitutional seminar on Wednesday evening. He defended Americans’ civil liberties against problematic provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act that have been broadly interpreted to allow the federal government to illegally conduct mass surveillance against law-abiding Americans.

USA Freedom 3.0 - Steps Forward and Missed Opportunities

Today, the House will likely pass their bill, the USA FREEDOM Act, to reform and reauthorize the controversial Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act. This portion of the 2001 law was revealed by Edward Snowden to be the legal justification for the massive, nearly limitless collection of American citizens’ telephone metadata by the NSA. Unfortunately, this year's USA Freedom Act as currently conceived is weaker than previous versions.

Federal Court: NSA's Metadata Program Is Illegal

In an era of judicial activism and a lot of nonsense talk about “a living document,” it’s refreshing to see that there are still some Courts interested in upholding the Constitution and defending the freedoms outlined in the Bill of Rights.

Patriot Act Renewal Action Happening Fast: See What's Coming Up

Set to expire at the end of May, Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act is only one of a number of authorities the government uses to defy the 4th Amendment and spy on millions of Americans without a direct warrant. Nevertheless, its upcoming sunset date provides defenders of liberty a strong chance to make serious move back towards our founders’ intention that:
