FreedomWorks North Carolina Scores Success in Macon County Budget Fight

MACON COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA. FreedomWorks was rewarded for our efforts at the Macon County Commission Meeting Monday night.  This is the first budget after revaluation and it presented an opportunity to do a repeat of four years ago when they promised a revenue-neutral tax rate which produced $3,000,000 more revenue than the previous year.

With this in mind, we started months ago to assure this didn’t happen again.  As soon as the new tax base was determined we did the math and came up with 25 mils.  We tried to work with the Commissioners which didn’t seem to have much effect.

We then went to plan “B” and placed full-page ads in two local papers for three weeks letting the world know that anything over 25 mils would constitute a tax increase and that there would be consequences.  We attended April’s meeting en masse wearing 25 mil limit stickers and waving 25 mil limit signs during the discussion.

There was a full-house in attendance at Monday night’s meeting and about half were F/W members and people they brought.  With just about everyone in the room wearing our 25 mil limit stickers, County Manager Sam Greenwood, using his version of our 25 mil limit sign announced a proposed rate of 24.5 mils.  We are pleased with this proposal and will encourage its adoption.
