At a recent “Raise the Wage” rally, Democratic Kentucky Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes slammed Mitch McConnell for his personal wealth, which she estimated to be in excess of $25 million. While Grimes’ arguments for the minimum wage are wildly off-base, she has managed inadvertently to put her finger on a problem that plagues Congress in general: the propensity of lawmakers to use their positions to enrich themselves rather than serve their constituents.

Another day, another scandal. Since President Obama has taken office, government bureaucracies have taken part in systematic campaigns to silence liberty minded groups. While these partisan shenanigans are outrageous, Noble Prize winner James Buchanan explains they are to be expected.  Dr. Buchanan developed a field of economics built around the idea that bureaucrats are merely human (surprise!). In other words, bureaucrats respond to incentives.

Why So Many Regulations Make So Little Sense

At some point in our lives, most of us will run up against a government regulation that seems to make no sense. While most people tend to believe that the government has their best interest at heart, there are also times when even the most devout supporter of a tightly regulated economy finds that a particular rule defies all attempts at logical interpretation. Why is this so? Why do lawmakers enact laws that are plainly ridiculous?
