A Strangeness Called Trust and Privacy

When Blanche DuBois stepped off that streetcar named Desire and stepped into her sister’s rough French Quarter neighborhood, it was an era far different from our own. The New Orleans portrayed in Tennessee Williams’s iconic play wasn’t idyllic or gentle, but it had the charm of post-war cheerfulness. America had slogged through the Great Depression, won the fight against Hitler, and was rewarded with decades of prosperity. Stanley Fischer may have been a violent lout to his wife and sister-in-law, but there was a certain innocence to the time after the Great War’s sequel and before Lyndon Johnson’s guns-and-butter debauchery. Civil society was still a strong presence in American life and disputes were handled neighbor-to-neighbor. The idea of ubiquitous government surveillance in peacetime was alien.

KIBBE: Hanging up on the NSA’s phone surveillance

A couple of months ago, Sen. Rand Paul and I, along with more than 386,000 other plaintiffs and lead counsel Ken Cuccinelli filed a class-action suit against the president of the United States and the directors of the National Security Agency (NSA). We aren’t seeking damages. We don’t want money.

Flying Cars vs Spying Cars

Let’s be honest: by now, we were supposed to have flying cars. Do you see any flying cars? No, nor do I. What’s worse is that people seem to think that they’re the top priority in automotive technology. The U.S. Department of Transportation wants cars to be able to “talk” to each other by 2017. It’s Big Brother’s Dream come true.

February 11th: The Day We Fight Back

The NSA is out of control. Recent leaks have revealed that the U.S. government is spying on all of us. This is a direct violation of our 4th amendment right against unreasonable government searches. Government officials are reading our emails, looking through our Internet search history, and listening in on our phone calls *without* a warrant.

US District Court Judge Rules NSA Has to Stop Collecting Data, For Now

They might still be monitoring your phone calls to mom and bartering for gold with your World of Warcraft character, but for the foreseeable future, the NSA will have to shut down its metadata collection program...at least according to US District Court Judge Richard Leon, who today approved an injunction against the operation pending the outcome of litigation.
