America Ranks Lower in Economic Freedom, Again

There was a time when America was the land of opportunity. The shining city on a hill in which anyone could succeed. Those were the days when America was an exemplary specimen of the free market. Unfortunately, it would appear, those days are gone. In fact, economic freedom is in decline around the world, not just in America.

General Electric is 'Winning the Future'

General Electric reported that its first-quarter earnings have increased by 77 percent compared to the fourth-quarter of 2010.  This comes as the New York Times reported that GE paid zilch on their taxes, while raking in over $14 billion in profits in 2010.  Even worse, GE actually received $3.2 billion in tax benefits.

Oregon: A Green Jobs Laboratory

Proponents of green jobs in the state of Oregon have been touting its successes, claiming the creation of “thousands of jobs”.  Borrowing from the narrative bellowing out of the White House, the Oregonian green jobs proponents claim tremendous job growth in a state mired in stubbornly high unemployment and awash in green energy subsidies.  The plain truth is that the spigot of subsidies to this green industry is rapidly fl

Double Down on Spending

After 3 years of prodigious deficits, gratuitous spending and a midterm election shellacking, the American people expected a semblance of fiscal discipline.  President Obama, with his new found political capital, was boldly going to drop his iron hand and finally “go line by line” through the federal budget to cut spending. Instead, Nancy Pelosi’s routinely quoted “are you serious?” seems a more apt summation of this budget proposal.

Toward Regulatory Reform

President Obama recently released an op-ed article in the Wall Street Journal entitled, “Toward a 21st-Century Regulatory System”.  This article contained a myriad of policy advancements culminating in an executive order aimed at reducing the potentially onerous regulatory encroachments of the ever indulging bureaucracy (my words, not his of course).  One could only hope he would start with Obamacare.

Scorecard on Government Spending

Recently, President Obama reiterated the necessity for increased government “investing” in our economy.  The way the President’s argument is shaped it seems like government has been standing out of the way, back in the shadows, just waiting to emerge amidst the calamity created by an unfettered deregulated private sector.  The only way we will be competitive in the successive years, of course, is if we spend more taxpayer money on liberal pet projects and “invest” in special interest groups slobbering to indulge in the government subsidy trough.
