FreedomWorks Joins Nation’s Largest Transpartisan Coalition for Criminal Justice Reform

An unlikely alliance of progressive and conservative groups has formed to pursue an aggressive effort to reform America’s criminal justice system. The Coalition for Public Safety will be the largest national effort working to pursue comprehensive criminal justice reforms that will reduce jail and prison populations and associated costs, and end the systemic problems of over-criminalization and over-incarceration.

Evidence Undermines Claims of Prison Reform Opponents

One of the arguments that those opposed to criminal justice reform often claim is that violent crime is a concern, making it unwise to pass even the most basic of reforms to reduce recidivism. This is hypocritical on its face, simply because reducing recidivism by definition reduces crime rates by lowering the number of re-offenders. Nevertheless, opponents of criminal justice reform are ramping up their rhetoric on crime rates to oppose the FIRST STEP Act, H.R. 5682.

FIRST STEP Act: 500 Driving Mile Rule and Restoring Congressional Intent to Truth in Sentencing Law

Last week, the House Judiciary Committee approved the Formerly Incarcerated Reenter Society Transformed Safely Transitioning Every Person (FIRST STEP) Act, H.R. 5682, by a 25 to 5 vote. Four Democrats voted against the measure because the bill doesn’t have any sentencing reforms. Only one Republican voted against it. Approval by the committee sets the stage for a floor vote, likely in the coming weeks.

Support the FIRST STEP Act, H.R. 5682

On behalf of FreedomWorks activists nationwide, I urge you to contact your representative and encourage him or her to support the Formerly Incarcerated Reenter Society Transformed Safely Transitioning Every Person (FIRST STEP) Act, H.R. 5682, introduced by Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) and Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.). The bill would require the implementation of evidence-based recidivism reduction programming in federal prisons and allow eligible offenders to earn time credits to serve part of their sentence in home confinement, halfway houses, or community supervision.

House Judiciary to Move Forward on Prison Reform

More than two months after being mentioned as a legislative priority in President Donald Trump's State of the Union address, the House Judiciary Committee will mark up the Prison Reform and Redemption Act, H.R. 3356, on Wednesday. FreedomWorks released its original letter of support for the bill in July 2017 and sent a revised letter on the amendment in the nature of a substitute that will be considered this week by the committee.

In the Case of Fair Sentencing Act Retroactivity, USSC Report Lends Resounding Endorsement

Retroactive application of the Fair Sentencing Act (FSA) which became law in 2010 and reduced the sentencing disparity for crack and powder cocaine from 100-to-1 to 18-to-1 has been a hotly contested issue in the criminal justice space. The primary concern from those opposed to retroactivity, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions, is that allowing offenders to petition the court for a review and reduction in their sentence could result in violent criminals being released to the streets, putting public safety at risk.

Omnibus Doesn’t Include Prohibition on DOJ’s Property Grab

The Consolidated Appropriations Act, H.R. 1625, is packed full of legislative priorities for leadership and other items to get enough votes for passage. Most of what was negotiated and slipped into the Consolidated Appropriations Act, known as the “omnibus,” behind closed doors is bad for taxpayers or just bad policy. Unfortunately, amendments that were previously passed by the House to prevent the Department of Justice from ramping up its use of civil asset forfeiture were not included in the bill.
