FRC Commends Six Congressmen for Refusing to Vote for Poor Education Bill

“In its present form, the House education bill is simply more of the same failed practices of the past,” Family Research Council President Ken Connor said Thursday. “FRC commends the six Republicans on the Education and the Workforce Committee for standing in the gap to oppose H.R. 1. The education bill passed out of committee bears little resemblance to the president’s original plan.”

The House Education and Workforce Committee overwhelmingly approved H.R. 1 Wednesday night. Six members, however, resisted pressure to vote for the bill primarily because the school choice and “Straight A’s” provisions were stripped from the bill. Rep. Bob Schaffer (R-Colo.), one of the six Republicans to vote against the bill said, “In the end, for the committee and the White House, appeasing Democrats was more important than sending the president’s plan to the floor intact.” Other congressmen joining Shaffer in opposing H.R. 1 were Pete Hoekstra (Mich.), Tom Tancredo (Colo.), Mark Souder (Ind.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), and Jim DeMint (S.C.).

“Insanity, goes the old saw, is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result,” Mr. Connor said. “If that’s true, what does that say about those who are promoting this bill? Until H.R. 1 includes genuine education reform measures, FRC will continue to oppose the bill.”

FRC is part of a coalition of groups and individuals who have publicly expressed opposition to H.R. 1. Other coalition members include Dr. James Dobson and Focus on the Family, Concerned Women for America, Eagle Forum, Independent Women’s Forum, Citizens for a Sound Economy, Education Policy Institute, and “Janet Parshall’s America.”
