Key Vote YES on Free Trade with Peru

On behalf of our 850,000 FreedomWorks members and supporters nationwide, I write to urge you to support the free trade agreement with Peru. The agreement would reduce tariffs for 80% of United States consumer and industrial exports to Peru and would phase out the remaining tariffs in the next ten years.

Free trade is good for both producers and consumers. Free trade drives the efficiency of the global economy and creates wealth. It is also an issue of freedom–Americans should be able to buy and sell legal products without government interference. Free trade benefits America, but there remains strong political opposition. Companies that are not competitive will seek protection from the government. Other opponents of trade are simply against capitalism.

Peru is one of the fastest growing economies in Latin America. Its growth rate was 8% in 2006. This free trade agreement will help continue Peru’s economic growth and help it modernize its economy. It will also allow American companies to vastly increase the amount of goods they export to Peru, which is a good thing for our producers and for Peruvian consumers.

FreedomWorks will count your vote as a KEY VOTE when calculating the FreedomWorks Economic Scorecard. The FreedomWorks Economic Scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the Jefferson Award, which recognizes legislators who demonstrate voting records in support of economic freedom.

Sincerely,
