Key Vote “Yes” Stop the Raid Amendment

On behalf of hundreds of thousands of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to VOTE “Yes” on Senator Jim DeMint’s “Stop the Raid” amendment; to be offered during the Senate debate on the FY 09 budget resolution.

“Stop the Raid” is an excellent opportunity for Congress to protect the Social Security surplus currently in the fund, staunching the flow of money from a rapidly bankrupting account Congress has borrowed for its own schemes.

“Stop the Raid” would create a reserve fund in the budget resolution that keeps Social Security safely away from the prying hands of pork-loving officials.  It is hardly a secret that the fund will be out of money by 2017 – running into the red.  For years, Congress has been siphoning tax dollars out of the Social Security trust fund for their own government funded pet-projects.  This year alone, nearly $200 billion will be “borrowed” from workers’ Social Security taxes.

For those who have been blindly paying into the system, believing that the government has been taking this money to secure their future, this is a gross abuse of trust.
Lawmakers that are serious about addressing America’s impending Social Security crisis and saving the system for future generations should support “Stop the Raid.” Congress needs to choose between their own pork-barrel projects or retirement security for hard-working Americans.

We will count your vote on the “Stop the Raid” amendment as a KEY VOTE when calculating the FreedomWorks Economic Scorecard for 2008. The FreedomWorks Economic Scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the Jefferson Award, which recognizes members of Congress with voting records that support economic freedom.

Sincerely,
