FreedomWorks Attends Young Conservatives of Texas Annual Convention

This past weekend I spoke about campus leadership at the Young Conservatives of Texas Convention in San Antonio. My talk focused on the key things a new chapter leader must remember when starting a campus group. The talk was well received by the audience, which averaged about a hundred people throughout the convention.

During the convention I asked Texas Senator John Cornyn whether he would sign the FreedomWorks "No Earmarks" pledge, but he replied that he would not. Sen. Cornyn did vote for the Earmark Moratorium but said that some earmarks were justified.

I handed out free copies of Bastiat’s The Law, Douglas Hyde’s Dedication and Leadership, and voter education cards on energy, regulations, entitlements, health care, taxes and spending.

The YCT hosted speakers from the Texas Public Policy Foundation, Eagle Forum, Texans for Fiscal Responsibility, the Lone Star Report and the Texas Legislature. The group has over a dozen campus chapters and is engaged in activism, lobbying, elections and educational events around the state.

This year’s “Chapter of the Year” award went to the YCT club at The University of Texas, where I went to school. The organization continues to fight for liberty around the state of Texas, and is a model of leadership, organization and activism for students around the country. FreedomWorks was glad to be a part of their convention this year and looks forward to teaming up with them on issues this year and in the Texas legislative session next year.
