FreedomWorks Letter to House: Cosponsor Continuing Resolution, H.J Res. 96

Dear Representative,

I urge you to cosponsor Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) and Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-OH) Continuing Resolution, H.J Res. 96, which would return non-security discretionary spending to FY2008 levels. Americans are rightfully concerned about Washington’s reckless spending habits that have increased the national debt to approximately $13.4 trillion. In just the past two years, federal government spending has increased by 21 percent. According to the Center for Fiscal Accountability (CFA), the average American was forced to work 231 days just to pay for their share of government spending and regulatory burdens this year. The CFA study finds that the 2010 Cost of Government Day falls 32 days later than it did in 2008.

Congressional leadership has not yet passed a budget or enacted any of the required twelve annual appropriation bills for FY 2011. With so many American families having to tighten their belts, it is inexcusable that Congress has not only failed to do the same, but has also failed to accomplish its core responsibility of passing a budget. The Republican Study Committee’s Continuing Resolution will save taxpayers $99 billion compared to the Democrat’s short term “continuing resolution.”

Additionally, the Republican Study Committee’s plan would ensure that no money will be used to fund the costly new health care law. Only six months after implementation, the new health care law has proven to be a bureaucratic nightmare that has already raised insurance premiums. The majority of American people have made it clear that they oppose this unconstitutional law that diminishes the quality of health care while increasing its cost.

Furthermore, the Continuing Resolution will prohibit any FY2011 appropriations from being used for earmarks. It is impossible to practice fiscal discipline while voting for wasteful earmark spending. According to Jeff Flake (R-AZ), “more disturbing is that earmarks are used as inducements to get members to sign on to large spending measures.”

Action must be taken immediately to reduce government spending to a more sensible level. It’s time to show the American people that you are willing to rein in runaway government spending. I urge you to start by cosponsoring Continuing Resolution H.J. Res. 96 today.

Sincerely,
