Key Vote YES on the SOAR Reauthorization Act, H.R. 10

As one of our over 6.9 million FreedomWorks activists nationwide, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to vote YES on the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results (SOAR) Reauthorization Act, H.R. 10. This bill reauthorizes the school voucher program in the District of Columbia.

DC public schools are among the worst in the country, despite the fact that the District spends more on education than three quarters of the states. This is proof that simply throwing money at a problem is not a smart way to solve it, a lesson that too few in Washington have been willing to learn.

With the understanding that choice and competition are what drive results, the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program has offered more than 6,000 students from low-income families the chance to choose their school, a choice that can mean the difference between academic and career success and failure. The program has been shown to increase high school graduation rates among participants, and increase the number of students who will go on to enroll in college.

For most families, securing a good education for their children is a top priority. It is only right that parents should be able to exercise some degree of choice in the matter. Students should not be trapped in failing or dangerous schools simply because of where they happen to live. The DC Opportunity Scholarship Program provides options to people who would otherwise not have them.

Please contact your representative and ask that he or she vote YES on the SOAR Reauthorization Act, H.R. 10. FreedomWorks will count the vote on this amendment as a Key Vote when calculating our Congressional Scorecard for 2015. The scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of Congress who consistently vote to support economic freedom and individual liberty.

Sincerely,
