North Carolina State Senate Fails Taxpayer’s Test

If yesterday’s budget vote in the State Senate was scored by the taxpayers, a majority of the Senators would have to repeat their grade. Twenty-eight Senators not only voted to repeal the promised “sunset” of income and sales tax ($857 million over two years) but also to postpone tax relief ( the child tax credit and the elimination of the marriage penalty tax) which was passed by the State House.

Common sense amendments by conservatives to make the budget process more efficient for taxpayers were quickly rebuffed by the Senate leadership. Amendments to set a cap on government spending and to require more accountability for hundreds of millions of tax dollars that fund non-governmental agencies were immediately tabled in favor of more taxes and a spending increase of $726 million next fiscal year.

North Carolina Citizens for a Sound Economy would like to thank the twenty-two Senators who voted for the taxpayers and voted “NO” to House Bill 397.
