Key Vote ‘NO’ on the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act

On behalf of nearly 850,000 FreedomWorks members nationwide, I write to urge you to VOTE NO on H.R. 2895, the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act. This legislation would add layers of bureaucracy to a situation already bogged down in government regulations and mismanagement.

In the words of the very government department already set-up for this purpose, the bill would be “robbing Peter to pay Paul” (Brian Montgomery, Assistant Secretary for Housing – Federal housing Commissioner, US. Department for Housing and Urban Development).

Not only does the act duplicate the efforts of the existing HUD department, at the same time the trust would compete with HUD for already limited funds.  Whereas the government needs to be streamlining and modernizing a department, H.R. 2895 creates an increasingly complex web of uncertain funding and extraneous administration, making this act, in essence, the appendix of the housing conundrum.

Rather than increasing the role of government in homeownership – claiming to make people more independent by virtue of homeownership, while simultaneously making them ever more dependent on government – Congress should focus on those things that create an environment of self-reliance and determination: economic conditions that increase jobs and prosperity, fewer hurdles for lenders, home builders, developers, and buyers to jump over, and policies that make it easier for private groups and nonprofits to build affordable housing through their own established and successful programs.

Reining in government begins with halting these unnecessary and wasteful propositions. Vote NO on the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act.
