Where Business and Second Chances Meet

It may seem surprising to consider licensing reform a criminal justice issue, but if you get to the meat of the issue then it makes sense. Unsurprisingly, barriers to employment make it harder find a job and that can result in those who can find work returning to crime.

ObamaCare is the Cronyism its Supporters Claimed to Oppose

Breaking with the Trump administration, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) ecently announced that he intends to protect the health insurance company subsidies that had previously been a part of ObamaCare. This is all in line with the Senate Majority Leader’s desire to stabilize the market which he believes is “collapsing” (in large part thanks to ObamaCare). Though reform in this field is absolutely necessary, doling out handouts to well connect insurance companies who helped write the bill are only going to help prevent necessary reform and continue a crony mindset in Washington that needs to go the way of the dinosaur.

As Premiums Go Up, Obamacare Enrollment Goes Down

Reports continue to come in about the results of implementing ObamaCare. Recently, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a report on the effectuated enrollment, or in other words selected a plan for the first two months of the year and paid their first month’s premium of ObamaCare. The results were admittedly rather surprising as they did not meet the expectations of where the program was supposed to be at this point.

The Next Single-Payer Failure

At the moment, California is considering the possibility of implementing a single-payer healthcare system. SB 562, the Healthy California Act, would essentially expand Medicare coverage so that it covered every person in the state of California. Having been approved by the Senate, the bill now goes to the state Assembly where it has a chance of passing. However, if it does pass, it would be a massive problem for the state as it would face significant increased state spending, higher taxes, and decreased quality of health care.

Repeal the Davis-Bacon Act

Many states have been discussing ways to pay for road funding. Now, there are two ways to make something affordable. One way is to increase revenue and the other way is to drive down costs. It has been suggested to take a look at replacing the gas tax to be able to afford road funding since the revenue brought in by the gas tax is on the decline while road coasts are increasing.

Repeal the Gas Tax

Earlier this year, Gov. Eric Holcomb (R-Ind.) signed legislation to raise the state gas tax of Indiana in order to increase road funding. The move had major support from the leadership of the state Republican Party with Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma saying “It’s a program that’s responsive, comprehensive, sustainable, and it’s for the next generation.” It seems interesting then that Gov. Holcomb promised to take Indiana to the “next level” since this seems like a step back.

An Act to Protect the Rights of Employees

Last month, Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) introduced H.R. 2723, the Employee Rights Act (ERA). Perhaps the largest labor law reform in the US since the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947, the legislation would significantly increase work privacy, promote dialogue between workers and bosses, protect freedom of conscience, and expand legal rights protections. Having garnered support from Heritage Action and Americans for Prosperity, this vital legislation is a crucial step for worker freedom.

Audit the Pentagon

There’s a show from the 1980s called ALF about an alien that ends up having to live with a family after accidentally crashing into their garage. In one episode, he runs up a major gambling tab and to pay it off raises the prices on items at the family’s garage sale without their knowledge to get the money needed to pay off his debts.

HHS Report Shows ObamaCare Has Dramatically Increased Premiums

During his bid for reelection in 2012, then-President Obama tried to defend ObamaCare in a campaign speech, telling his supporters, “[Y]our premiums will go down.” It has been about five years since he said that and they have gone significantly differently than the President intended. Evidence has actually found that the reverse happened and that premium prices went up.

Restoring Article I of the Constitution

Throughout the last century, Congress has been delegating a lot of its legislative authority to the executive branch through the creation of new administrative agencies to make new regulations.
