The Fiscal Cliff Bill - Special Interests Profit While the Rest of Us Pay

It's like deja vu all over again.  The fiscal cliff bill, H.R. 8, was drafted behind closed doors, and lawmakers were given six minutes to read the 154-page bill before voting on it.  Once again, we apparently had to pass the bill to find out what's in it.

The Fiscal Cliff Aftermath: How They Voted

After weeks of backroom deals and fruitless negotiations with the White House and the Democrat-controlled Senate, the House and Senate passed a bill to supposedly avert the dreaded "fiscal cliff". The bill, H.R. 8, was titled "the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012".

The Lessons from Plan B

If President Obama and Senator Reid were actually negotiating in good faith, then one could argue that Speaker Boehner's Plan B was an acceptable, if unpalatable, compromise.  After all, it permanently extended the current tax rates for very nearly all Americans, eliminating the annual game of chicken in Congress over whether our taxes will automatically increase.

Today is an important day - we're one giant step closer to reversing the government takeover of our health care. The deadline for states to begin setting up their own, state-run health care exchange under ObamaCare was today, December 14th. This deadline was a crucial trial for ObamaCare, and the verdict is in -- 26 states, a majority of the union, are currently declining to set up an exchange.Below is a map of how each state stands on the exchanges:

ObamaCare Exchange Insurance Fees: The "Affordable Care Act" Becomes Even More Unaffordable

With 23 states (so far) refusing to set up health care exchanges to implement ObamaCare, the federal government is being forced to implement its own exchanges in these states instead.  Since the ObamaCare law did not provide any funding to do this, observers have been wondering - "how are they going to pay for these exchanges?"Unsurprisingly, the answer is - wait for it - another new tax!

Progress Report: The States Stand Up to ObamaCare

This week, states faced what (for many of them) was a difficult decision – whether or not to implement a health care exchange to comply with ObamaCare.  The way the administration put it, the states had an easy decision: either set up their own exchanges and have control over how the new law governed insurance, or cede that control to the feds.  They had until November 16th to decide.

Obama's Parting Gift: Midnight Regulations Incoming

Win or lose, the Obama administration isn't done expanding the government yet.  A large number of regulations are under development in several agencies that will cost billions of dollars in the economy and devastate companies already struggling to profit and expand in this sluggish economy.  Even if President Obama is defeated, his administrations can act during the "lame duck" period between the election and the inauguration to leave behind new regulations that will be difficult for a Romney administration to repeal - a practice known as creating "midnight regulations".
