The GDP Seduction

The standard measure of our national economic output is the Gross Domestic Product or GDP. Judging economic performance on the formula for GDP virtually guarantees that government will spend money it doesn't have, whether that money comes from taxing, borrowing, or as is currently in vogue, simply printing it.The standard formula for GDP is:GDP = C + I + NX + G

Hostile Takeover

FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe has a terrific new book, "Hostile Takeover". Kibbe describes how the explosion of information choices available to Americans has already changed politics and will continue to do so.  Though not organized this way, there are three broad themes in the book, leading to one inescapable conclusion:Top-down journalism is a dying paradigmTop-down, Keynesian economics is a tool of oppressionTop-down politics is no way to run a free countryThe inescapable conclusion: while there is a lot of work ahead of the advocates for individual freedom and limited government, the decentralization of information has the wind at our backs.

A Clue to a Clueless President

Barack Obama is not merely uninformed on economics, he is enthusiastically misinformed. He says he keeps trying to fix the economic mess he "inherited", but nothing he does works.   There has been absolutely nothing in @BarackObama's performance to date that suggests he can improve the economy if given 4 more years. Zip.— Brad Thor (@BradThor) The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. No matter how much a politician likes to proclaim his skill and wisdom -- and Barack Obama likes it as few others -- eventually the effects of his policies on the real world are what matter. Barack Obama has not done what he said he would do, because he can't.

Romney, Leavitt and Repealing Obamacare

Mitt Romney has reportedly chosen an Obamacare proponent to lead his transition team. Romney's attempt to soft-pedal the choice of former Bush appointee Mike Leavitt to the important post shows an understanding of how controversial the pick might be.

The Minimum Wage - More Unintended Consequences

All across our nation this summer, especially in larger cities, millions of Americans will be unable to find a job. The young, the poorly educated, and minorities will be the most affected. The biggest reason is the minimum wage and the barrier it creates to full employment.

Stopping Obamacare at the State Level

FreedomWorks hosted a live blog event, “How to Stop ObamaCare at the State Level” on Tuesday, May 22. This post summarizes the hour-long session, and we will have other posts detailing the various topics. Activists should urge state legislators to avoid implementing all parts of Obamacare, and force the federal government to fund its own mandates.

Too Big Not To Fail

Some pundits are saying that the big banks like JP Morgan and Bank of America are too big and need to be broken up, in sort of a preemptive antitrust enforcement. But it would be far better if we just let the free market work, as we should have been doing all along.

Republican Nomination in IL-13

Illinois Republican Party officials will vote May 19 replace the retiring Congressman Tim Johnson on the November ballot in Illinois' 13th District. Four candidates competing for the nomination gathered at a forum Saturday.  Party Chairmen in the district will have to choose between two candidates who focus on what the country needs and two others who focus on winning, no matter what they have to say.The field (in order left to right in accompanying photo):Kathy Wassink - 9/12 activist and businesswoman. Erika Harold - Chicago lawyer and former Miss AmericaRodney Davis - Congressional staffer and state party insider. Jerry Clarke - Congressional aide, Army Reserve Officer, and unsuccessful campaign managerGrassroots activists would support enthusiastically either Wassink or Harold. Wassink is more outspoken and sure of her positions on issues, while Harold is more eloquent and prepared. Neither Davis nor Clarke would attract grassroots support outside their immediate circles.Clarke, coming out for Project Labor Agreements for government contracts, has no business being in any legislature.
