The Regulatory Landscape in America - A Morass Of Red Tape Designed To Create A Command Economy

Yesterday, I reported on the volume of regulations headed our way in 2013 that rivals Darth Vader's Galactic Empire for sheer size, as well as oppressiveness. Today, The Heritage Foundation is out with its Top 10 Regulations of 2012:

Every year since college, my best friend Dan and I have submitted our best observations on a wide range of topics that reflect on the year that has just expired. We follow the well established template of The McLaughlin Group program. Here are my reflections on 2012.

A Tale Of Two Corporations

Two weeks ago, the Oregon legislature was called into special session by Governor Kitzhaber to consider a bill that would allow the Governor exclusive rights to unilaterally negotiate future tax terms with any corporation considering expansion in the state. This bill was being considered in a rush because Nike reportedly was being courted for a large expansion in other states.

Oregon Governor Announces Plan To Give Special Tax Promises To Major Employer

On Monday, December 10, Governor John Kitzhaber (D-OR) held a press conference to announce that he will convene a special legislative session on Dec 14. The purpose? To pass legislation giving the governor sole authority to negotiate a special tax deal with any corporation willing to make minimum investments in infrastructure and job creation in the state:

The Horrors of State Run Medicine

American Conservatives have been sounding the alarm about state run health care and what horrors await us in a government run health care plan for most of the last century. In fact, Ronald Reagan warned us what was to come several decades ago.

Three News Stories Explain EXACTLY What's Wrong With Portland Public Schools

Once again, Portland's public school system has become a national laughing stock. In the 90s, the cartoon strip Doonesbury rightly made fun of our schools for performing so poorly. Oregon has consistently ranked near the bottom of states in overall school performance. Earlier this year, we even had a grade school superintendent adding the peanut butter and jelly sandwich to the lexicon of racist buzzwords. This superintendent is in the news again:

The GOP's Race Problem

This article really made me mad:GOP’s trouble is not with color, it’s with kindThe GOP doesn’t have a problem with black. Clarence Thomas, Condoleezza Rice, Allen West, Mia Love, Vernon Parker and many others are respected conservatives of color. The issue is the kind of black that Republicans prefer.

Kevin The Geek - Harassed By City Government For Exercising First Amendment Rights

You may recall this story from August, shortly after Obama uttered those famous words about business owners not building that. Kevin Kerwin of Lake Oswego, Oregon, put up a sign in his shop window that said, "Hey Obama ... I BUILT MY BUSINESS BY MYSELF YOU INCOMPETENT LOUSY EXCUSE FOR A PRESIDENT ... I'm KevintheGeek and I approve this message".

Sequestration and the Dire Effects to State Budgets

With Congress set to convene to tackle sequestration and the fiscal cliff, the talk has once again centered around federal budget cuts and their potential effects. Tax hikes are back on the table, according to a few prominent Republicans this weekend. A large number of difficult military cuts looms.
