FreedomWorks Policy Update: Is HHS Hiding Latest ObamaCare Enrollment Data?

In the early months of the open enrollment period for the insurance exchanges created under the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare), nobody in the Obama administration seemed to know how many people had actually signed up for the subsidized insurance plans being offered. This left a lot of experts and members of Congress curious given that the exchanges, after all, were Internet-based and must have had some sort of electronic record of usage and purchases. As bad as the technical problems were during the initial roll out of the ObamaCare exchanges, there was simply no way that these websites were built without a mechanism that tracked or could be used to track enrollment. Yet the administration remained persistent that they had no such data.

The Real ObamaCare Scoreboard (Spoiler: The Citizens Are Losing)

At last week’s farewell ceremony for departing Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, the latest victim of ObamaCare’s job genocide, President Obama spoke of the legacy she leaves behind through her oversight of the Affordable Care Act’s implementation. “The final score speaks for itself,” the president said emphatically, referencing the recent announcement that over 7 million individuals have now signed up for insurance coverage on ObamaCare exchanges. The final score certainly does speak for itself, Mr. President, but I don’t think you are listening.

Supreme Court Hears Oral Arguments on Greenhouse Gases

A critical case was argued before the U.S. Supreme Court late February that has major implications for the electric utility industry and future efforts by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to curb greenhouse gas emissions. The case is called Utility Air Regulatory Group v. EPA and it will determine whether or not the EPA acted legally when it granted itself the authority to regulate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from stationary emitters such as power plants.

"The Common Law Advantage"
"Without question, the U.S. legal system, from the structure and operations of the judicial branch to the governing laws of the nation, was founded in the common law legal tradition. Americans owe much of the economic prosperity they've enjoyed to this fact."

The Common Law Advantage

Without question, the U.S. legal system, from the structure and operations of the judicial branch to the governing laws of the nation, was founded in the common law legal tradition. Common law, for those unfamiliar with the concept, is law that develops organically over time and is based on the accepted customs and shared values of a society. More specific to its history, common law was developed in England as it emerged from the Middle Ages, where the legal systems of the disparate regions were united by royal decrees and the decisions of judges based not on the wisdom of the given monarch or judge, but on previous decisions made in other legal cases.

The Minimum Wage is Still a Bad Idea

There’s quite a bit on Congress’s to do list entering this new year, especially with the 2014 midterms looming. Discontent with Democrats continues to grow as implementation of the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, reveals the entire law to be something akin to a scheme hatched by Wile E. Coyote. With that, Democrats, with the help of some progressive Republicans worried about their own hides, have turned to a good populist ploy: the minimum wage.

New Year's Resolution: No More Zombie Tax Loopholes

While tonight is New Year’s Eve for the rest of the country, inside the Beltway over the last few years December 31st has been akin to the Night of the Living Dead. Not because worn out Capitol Hill staff and interns wander the streets in a drunken stupor (though this is an accurate assessment), but because dozens of tax extenders set to expire at year’s end are usually reauthorized in bulk by Congress.

Baucus Energy Tax Overhaul is Doubling Down on Bad Policy

Next year is due to be Senator Max Baucus’s last year in Washington, solidified by his recent nomination to be the next ambassador to China; and it’s no secret that the Democrat from Montana has his sights on overhauling the tax code before he leaves. With the business of 2013 quickly coming to a close, details have begun to emerge as to what exactly the Senator is cooking up. Some of the details leaked so far specify how the Senator’s plan changes the way that the tax code regulates the energy industry.
