Chairman Thomas, Commissioners, good afternoon. My name is Michael Cannon and I represent Citizens for a Sound Economy Foundation, a non-profit, non-partisan consumer group with 250,000 members. Citizens for a Sound Economy Foundation believes consumer choice and competition among health care and coverage providers are the keys to consumer protection. These tools enable consumers and health coverage providers to discipline those providers who fail to offer a quality product.

In 1994, faced with the horror of having government bureaucrats make their health care decisions for them, the American public rejected the Clinton health care plan. On September 15, President Clinton told a union audience of his failed health care plan, "What I tried to do before won't work. Maybe we can do it another way. That's what we've tried to do, a step at a time until eventually we finish this."

CNN's abrupt pulling of ads criticizing the proposed UN global warming treaty deals a serious blow to the network's reputation as an objective news source, a market-oriented consumer advocacy group charged today.

Citizens for a Sound Economy hailed today's votes by the Health and Environment Subcommittee to move Food and Drug Administration modernization to the full Commerce Committee. By voice vote, the subcommittee approved three separate bills to improve how the FDA regulates food (H.R. 2469), drugs (H.R. 1411) and medical devices (H.R. 1710).

As printed in the Washington Post, September 15, 1997 The debate about voluntary national testing for fourth-grade reading and eighth-grade math has until now been dominated by two views. One view has been voiced by some conservatives and Republicans, notably Rep. Bill Goodling, chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. They oppose national testing under any condition. The other view is that of the Clinton administration, which has its own national testing scheme.

She stopped when I flashed the lights. It was an odd exercise, but we were recreating an accident scene, and Cheryl represented a dead man. I was a driver who may have killed him. I had been sued by a family who was accusing me of killing their son in a motorcycle crash. We went out to that dark road hoping to revive our memory of that horrible night.

For many months, a NAIC1 working group has been drafting model legislation aimed at preventing unfair discrimination against victims of domestic violence. Current efforts are focused on provision of homeowner's and other types of property and casualty insurance. Similar legislation is being debated in many state legislatures and has been introduced in the U.S. Congress.2
